Facing temptation

temptationSCRIPTURE: Luke 4:1-13
Jesus was just like Adam and Eve in the garden: sinless, but able to be tempted to sin.
Satan tempts Jesus like he did Adam and Eve (only now in a wilderness, not in a garden).
Adam and Eve should have responded as Jesus did, by quoting what God said.
Each time He is tempted, Jesus refers back to God’s words, choosing to listen to God and not Satan.
This is not the only time Jesus is tempted, Satan waits “for a better time”, and tries again.
Jesus shows us that Satan can be resisted, and that with the Spirit’s help we too can resist temptation.
Every day the Enemy looks for opportunities to distract, deceive and defeat us… we need to be on guard.
We have God’s love, we have the Spirit’s power, we have everything we need for life and godliness.
But do we have the willingness and desire, are we committed to doing what God says?
“God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted any more than you can take. But when you are tempted, God will give you a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Be sure of this, Satan will look for the right time to tempt you… how will you respond?
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
God, help me to see that I am like Adam and Jesus, facing temptation every day to turn on You. Remind me of Your will, and help me to cling to it when tempted to sin.

  1. Observations/Application
All of the people are tempted by Satan – from the beginning of time till the end of time, even our Saviour. But as Christ showed us the word of God is our sword, and faith in that word is our shield. God is with His people – then as we saw with the cloud and the fire, the Spirit when Christ was baptized and also today. He gives His people what they need. Yet Satan continues to ‘bait’ the people but God gives the power to overcome. We need to be knowledgeable in the Word and walk in that Word. While we are in this world, we are never out of Satan’s temptations – always within his grasp. Yet the Spirit within us guides us and gives the victory.

I need to walk with my risen Saviour each day.

    Prayer
Help me this day Lord to walk in the Word.

    1. God gives His people strength.
If we believe in His way, He’s swift to repay
All those who bear the burden of the day
    God gives His people strength.

    2. God gives His people hope
If we but trust in His word, our prayers are always heard
He warmly welcomes anyone who’s erred.
    God gives His people hope.

    3. God gives His people love
If we but open wide our hearts, He’s sure to do His part
He’s always the first to make a start.
    God gives His people love.

    4. God gives His people peace.
When sorrow fills us to the brim, and courage grows dim
He lays to rest our restlessness in Him.
    God gives His people peace.
