The kind of leadership our world needs

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 72
What does our world need… good leadership.
God appointed Adam and Eve to rule creation, but look at the mess we made of it.
Solomon is reflecting here on good leadership: a good leader is just and merciful.
When we live and lead in a just and merciful way, the whole creation and all its inhabitants benefit.
What strikes me as I read this is how much this description reflects Jesus:
People who are in need will cry out, and he will save them. He will save those who are hurting. They don’t have anyone else who can help them. He will take pity on those who are weak and in need. He will save them from death. He will save them from people who beat others down. He will save them from people who do mean things to them. Their lives are very special to him.” (Psalm 72:12-14)
Jesus leads as Adam and Eve (and us) were supposed to, and under His authority all creation is blessed.
He is both just and merciful, and treats all people as “very special to Him”.
The hurting, the dying, the needy, the weak, the beaten down look to Him with hope, and they are “very special to Him”.
Jesus is rebuilding God’s world, God’s kingdom, by gathering followers who will lead like this.
We are also God’s royal family, and with God’s help we are enabled to “rule in the right way”.
As you go about your business today, think about how Jesus lived and served as God’s royal son.
Do what you do – at home, at work, at school, wherever – as God’s royal child and representative.
Live and serve and care and share in a way that others, and all creation, will rejoice!
Like Jesus, treat others as if they are very special to you too, just as they are to Him!
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, today I have the opportunity to live and love and lead like You, in a way that will honour God and bless others. Give me Your Spirit, that I may be the kind of leader our world needs.

  1. Observations/Application
    And what does the Lord require of you?
    To act justly and to love mercy
    and to walk humbly[a] with your God.
    These words from Micah jump to my mind while reading this passage. How does one lead/rule?
    With God on his side so that the decisions are GodLead. SpiritLead. GodStrong. Not my will but Yours be done.
    As far as it depends upon me, I will live at peace with all mankind. That is only a possibility if I also look after his welfare and God is the only Provider for that power. As redeemed, I can only live in His power doing what He requires of me – to love Him with all my heart, soul, mind and strength AND to love my neighbour as myself. Then truly leadership is God’s style. Then truly the people will be blessed.
    Let’s all sing and praise the name of the Lord our God forever and ever. Then we will see GodPower – God at work through His people – and they will praise Him. God is the Ruler yet and forevermore.

    Prayer
    Praise Him, praise Him, all ye little children,
    God is love, God is love;
    Praise Him, praise Him, all ye little children,
    God is love, God is love.

    Love Him, love Him, all ye little children,
    God is love, God is love;
    Love Him, love Him, all ye little children,
    God is love, God is love.

    Thank Him, thank Him, all ye little children,
    God is love, God is love;
    Thank Him, thank Him, all ye little children,
    God is love, God is love.
