Why God hates divorce (and we do too)

SCRIPTURE: Mark 10:1-12
Our sinful human nature looks for loopholes and escapes, driven by the need to serve and protect itself.
God created us to live in joy, freedom, peace, with our primary focus on serving and protecting others.
We’ve moved from thriving for all to surviving of the fittest… and marriage has become a liability.
God’s will from the beginning that we enjoy harmony, love, faithfulness to promises and security in that love.
Now people abuse, neglect, cheat on, accuse, take advantage of, etc. each other, and look to God for assurance that they are still OK.
Divorce is not God’s plan from the beginning, neither is sin or death, and yet they have become unavoidable.
It is not the unforgivable sin, but neither is it an easy option.
God hates it because it hurts, it undermines the fabric and well-being of society.
Jesus speaks strongly against divorce not because He condemns those who go through it, but because He knows it is painful, harmful, with devastating ripple effects on those connected to it.
It may be unavoidable, but do everything you can to avoid it, and seek God’s mercy and help when it happens… He will be there to help you pick up the pieces.
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
God, the challenge for me is not the specific issue of divorce, but the question of my marriage. Help me to devote myself to building my marriage, and not give in to the inclination to serve and protect myself.
