SCRIPTURE: Genesis 39:1-23
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
Joseph had been a spoiled child, which led to his brother’s hatred and betrayal. Yet by the time he arrives in Egypt (a long journey by caravan), something has happened to his heart, softened by fear, grief, and perhaps repentance. Humbled before God, he does not wallow in despair but he lives in the grace of His God, in humility and integrity. His humility and integrity, within the gracious favour of God, lead to his increasing success and his impending fall, as it was his favoured position that put him into the line of sight of Potiphar’s wife.
God humbles us through our circumstances, and lifts us up as we surrender to Him. But we should not presume that God’s favour will protect us from harm and danger. In fact, here we see the opposite. The more God grants us, the more He expects of us. The greater the blessing, the greater the challenge, and the risk. Let those who say, “I am so blessed”, beware, for the very blessings which they enjoy may be the occasion of an even greater battle.
PRAYER:
Lord, I am so blessed. And I do sense that my blessings have become a barrier between us. Unlike Joseph, I have not resisted the temptations that have come my way. Worldly love and concern has distracted me, and is deadening my heart to You. Help me… Amen.
