Aug 26 — Psalm 7:1-17

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 7:1-17

OBSERVATION:
David has been cruelly treated by Cush, a Benjamite, perhaps a supporter of the previous king Saul (also a Benjamite). Maybe at the same time as previous Psalm when David was fleeing Absalom’s coup, and he was cursed by Shimei, also a Benjamite (2 Samuel 16:5-12). Here David claims innocence, and we know that he was very good to Saul’s family (see 2 Samuel 19:15-23). David entrusts himself to God as the righteous judge. Like Paul, he claims innocence but allows God to decide, and to punish him if we was wrong (1 Corinthians 4:3-5).

APPLICATION:
Do I feel as confident as David or Paul if I were to stand before the Lord? Not for unknown sin (of which there is much) but for sin that I am aware of? Both David and Paul were striving to do what was right, with sincere and serious effort. Am I? I know that I am saved by grace alone, but does this make me lazy in regards to striving to do better, fighting against the sin I am aware of? What happens to those who accept salvation by grace, but then do not strive to fight against sin that remains, who presume upon grace? Is this what Hebrews 10:26-31 is getting at?

PRAYER:
Lord, I know that You love me because of Your grace, not because of my goodness. But I also sense that I presume upon Your grace. Help me to strive sincerely and seriously against the sin that continues to hold me back. Amen.
