Aug 12 — Acts 13:13-31

SCRIPTURE: Acts 13:13-31

OBSERVATION:
Paul attends the synagogue (Jewish church) service, though his primary mission is to the Gentiles. He briefly reviews the history of Old Testament Israel, showing how Jesus is the fulfllment of Old Testament promises and prophecies, the ultimate king (messiah). Paul also quotes the message of John the Baptist, that Jesus is more powerful than he (or any other prophet). Even the death of Jesus was in fulfillment to the Old Testament promises and prophecies, leading to the ultimate victory over death through the resurrection.

APPLICATION:
Paul uses the Old Testament story to communicate the message of Jesus. Do I? Is my preaching/teaching an unpacking of Jesus’ story, or is it more self-help, moralism, motivational speeching? I sense the Lord challenging me through the example of Paul that I need to be better prepared to communicate the message, to share my hope with others in a gentle, clear way (see 1 Peter 3:15-16). Do I proclaim the message of Jesus clearly, boldly, like Paul does here (Colossians 4:3-4)?

PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for the example of Paul, who inspires me with His boldness and dedication to Your mission. Help me to follow through with my intention to better communicate Your message! Amen.
