wherever we walk!

SCRIPTURE: Genesis 13
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
(Read my reflection from 2008)
The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you. [Genesis 13:14-17]
One man standing in a foreign land where he is a stranger.
Yet this one man is assured that he will become a leader of a great nation, a people who cannot be numbered because they are so many.
One man, yet backed with the promise and power and authority of God.
Wherever he walks through the land, he is assured that it will be his!

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” [Matthew 28:18-20]
One man standing in a foreign land where He is a stranger.
Yet this one man is assured that he will become a leader of a great nation, a people who cannot be numbered because they are so many.
One man, yet backed with the promise and power and authority of God.
Wherever he walks through the land, he is assured that it will be his!

Jesus sends out His followers with the same promise and power as Abram.
And wherever they walk, they are claiming the land for Him – Who holds all authority in heaven and on earth.
They are to go, even though their numbers are small, even though its hard to believe.
They are to go in the promise and power of the true King, knowing that He will establish them and make them into a great mass of people.
After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. [Revelation 7:9]

No doubt Abram must have sometimes doubted, after all the land was still under the control of others?
No doubt the disciples must have sometimes doubted, after all the land was still under the control of others?
Yet in both cases God did multiply them, and we are a part of that multiplication.
And His calling stands still for today, to walk the length and breadth of the planet, for He is giving it to us, for He is with us.
To the very ends of the earth, to the very end of the age.
One man, one promise, and a great multitude that no one can count!

PRAYER:
Lord, I need this assurance as we continue to do our work in the area where You have sent us. As we walk through this community, help us to remember this promise!

  1. Sometimes we walk around in circles. Abram did. He came to the place where he had earlier built an altar. It’s a good place to come to and meet with God. At the end of the chapter, after parting with Lot, Abram again heard the word of the LOrd and built an altar. It seems to be a ‘regular’ practice for Abraham to praise and give thanks to the Lord for the mighty things He has done and is doing.

    It was Canadian thanksgiving this past Monday. I too am returning to this place again and giving praise and thanksgiving to the Lord for all what He has done for me. My walk too, has been blessed, more than I even imagined and dared hope for. I too, need to walk so that there is no quarreling among my people. We all need to walk our walk with our talk that others may see Christ Jesus living in us. Abram trusted in God that all will come to pass as He had promised. How? Just trust and obey.

    All will come to pass as He has promised to all who believe. How? Just trust and obey. Just walk with the risen Saviour each and every day. Live a life of thanksliving.

    O Jesus, I have promised
    To serve Thee to the end;
    Be Thou forever near me,
    My Master and my Friend;
    I shall not fear the battle
    If Thou art by my side,
    Nor wander from the pathway
    If Thou wilt be my Guide.
    Oh, let me feel Thee near me;
    The world is ever near;
    I see the sights that dazzle,
    The tempting sounds I hear;
    My foes are ever near me,
    Around me and within;
    But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer,
    And shield my soul from sin.
    Oh, let me hear Thee speaking,
    In accents clear and still,
    Above the storms of passion,
    The murmurs of self-will;
    Oh, speak to reassure me,
    To hasten, or control;
    Oh, speak, and make me listen,
    Thou Guardian of my soul.
    O Jesus, Thou hast promised
    To all who follow Thee
    That where Thou art in glory
    There shall Thy servant be;
    And Jesus, I have promised
    To serve Thee to the end;
    Oh, give me grace to follow,
    My Master and my Friend.
    Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,
    And in them plant mine own;
    My hope to follow duly
    Is in Thy strength alone.
    Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,
    Uphold me to the end;
    And then to rest receive me,
    My Savior and my Friend.
