the secret

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 142
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble. [Psalm 142:2]
This relates to my own definition for prayer – talking things through with God.
Airing my complaint, telling Him about my trouble; or at other times, expressing my joy or hope or desire.
My enemies and troubles may be different from David’s, but I still struggle.
I also find myself in a prison of sorts, a cave of despair or defeat or discouragement.
At those times, when everything and everyone else seems hopeless, I lean on Him.
When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way. [Psalm 142:3]

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. [Matthew 6:6]
Jesus describes time alone with God, talking with Him about what it is we are hopeful or concerned about.
The unseen Father, that others do not see, is the true source of strength.
It is the Father who watches over our way.
There will come a time for everyone (I believe) when all that life has to offer will not be enough; we will be disappointed and feel empty.
At those times, those who hold onto the Lord will know where to turn.
They find their greatest treasure in Him, He is the Source of their deepest satisfaction.
I cry to you, LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” [Psalm 142:5]

Paul describes this as the secret, to contentment.
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. [Philippians 4:12-13]
This is what David is clinging to in his cave; he finds strength and success in the Lord.
Jesus said, when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is unseen.
Pour out your joy or your complaint, share your opportunities or your troubles with Him.
He is there for you, He is you portion and your refuge!
He will release you from your prison and give you reason to praise Him!
Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. [Psalm 142:7]

PRAYER:
Lord, here I am writing about spending time alone with You in prayer, and I didn’t do it myself today. Here I am, I’m praying now! You are my refuge and my strength!
