July 5 — Acts 7:35-50

SCRIPTURE: Acts 7:35-50

OBSERVATION:
Stephen is still defending himself against the charge of ”speaking against the holy place and against the law” (Acts 6:13). He shows that having the temple and the law are not the most important thing but humble, submissive hearts. Even Moses predicted Jesus’ coming, but the history of Israel shows how often people reject God’s purpose, whether or not they have the temple. Stephen is moving to the conclusion that his accusers are no different, making religious symbols more important, claiming to be religious but being far from God’s heart.

APPLICATION:
I am struck by Stephen’s boldness, also by his use of Jewish history to illustrate his message. The OT is different from our day, yet some things never change, our fickle, faithless hearts. Understanding the Bible is not enough, it needs to be applied to our own hearts and lives. Jesus (God’s prophet, messenger, Word) is always speaking into our hearts/lives, and can help us if we let Him. So the question for me is this – where am I missing the point?

PRAYER:
Lord, deep down I am no different than these religious leaders. I need to remain open to Your instruction and application of Truth to my life. I need You to transform mu heart and mind. Please help me… Amen.
