July 4 — Acts 7:17-34

SCRIPTURE: Acts 7:17-34

OBSERVATION:
Accused of ”speaking against the holy place and against the law” (Acts 6:13), Stephen now demonstrates that the people also misunderstood what God was doing in Moses day – just like the religious leaders in this passage. The religious leaders thought that they were loyal to Abraham and Moses, but onve again (as throughout OT history), they misunderstood and resisted God’s plan, and were in fact working against Abraham and Moses (John 8:34-40, John 5:45-47).

APPLICATION:
Am I misunderstanding or resisting what God is up to in the world today, thinking that I am serving Him? Throughout the ages, people just don’t get it, we twist and distort God’s message to fit our own ways and desires. How many of our church debates have been about things that, to God, didn’t really matter, while we ignore the really important stuff (like justice or mercy or forgiveness or love, Matthew 23:23). God is always at work, but often it is in ways that surprise us, ways that we dislike or resist!

PRAYER:
Lord, where are You at work in ways that make me uncomfortable? Where do I need my eyes opened. Please help me to see better, that I may join You, and not resist You. Amen.
