The Church of the Nazarene is an evangelical Christian denomination that emerged from the 19th century Holiness movement in North America with its members colloquially referred to as Nazarenes. It is the largest Wesleyan-holiness denomination in the United States.[1] At the end of September 2009, the Church of the Nazarene had 1,945,542 members in 24,285 churches in 156 different “world areas”.[2] Most members of the Church of the Nazarene are found in the United States (659,513), Haiti (116,000),[3] Bangladesh (65,000),[4] and India (59,039).[5] The denomination has the highest per capita population in the nations of Cape Verde, Samoa, Barbados, Haiti and Swaziland.[6]

The mission is “to respond to the Great Commission of Christ to ‘go and make disciples of all nations’ (Matthew 28:19)”.[7] In December 2006, this was expressed more succinctly as “to make Christlike disciples in the nations”.[8] This frames the global mission of the denomination. In 2009 the General Assembly indicated in its revision of Article XI of the Manual the means for accomplishing its mission: “making disciples through evangelism, education, showing compassion, working for justice, and bearing witness to the kingdom of God.”[9] Since 2001, the three “core values” of the Church have been identified as “Christian, missional, and holiness.”[10]

  2. Because people are different. There are different interpretations of the bible and so many different styles of worship. I dont see it as a negative. We are all different parts of one body and we have different abilities, styles and gifts and God uses them all in different ways. Each church has a mission and a calling.
