waiting quietly

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 62
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. [Psalms 62:1]
Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. [Psalms 62:5]

I don’t know about you, but the more agitated or angry I become, the more likely I am to spout things from my mouth that I shouldn’t.
If I am feeling pressured, or under attack, the pressure builds up within to defend and protect myself.
In light of this, I admire how David can wait quietly before God, while all hell is breaking lose against him.

Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” [Mark 14:60-61]
Jesus remains silent, He makes no reply, even though He knows what is unfolding against Him.
He does not try to defend Himself, to shame those around Him or fight for His innocence.
This reveals an inner strength and God-confidence that guards Him against what is happening around Him.
It is the same quiet waiting that David speaks about, a hope and confidence in God, that He will vindicate Him.

I want this kind of inner strength and confidence when things around me are falling apart.
When we allow our circumstances to rile us, our responses are usually less than helpful.
We say things we will later regret, our reactions will probably not be the best or beneficial in the long run.
But to resist the pressure to react is tough, it takes a huge inner strength and confidence in God.
This does not happen on its own, it takes regular renewal through time spent with God.
Only as we build up ourselves in God when we are alone will we be able to “wait quietly” when we are under attack.
As we spend time with God, the Spirit reinforces our heart and mind, arming and preparing us for the battles that will come.

Next time you find yourself under pressure or attack, repeat these lines from David.
I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. [Psalms 62:1]
Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. [Psalms 62:5]

Keep on repeating them even when things are going OK, to prepare yourself for the challenges and opportunities of each day.

PRAYER:
Lord, I wait quietly before You, for my victory comes from You. I choose to let all that I am wait quietly before You, for my hope is in You!

  1. In God I trust. When?

David’s confidence here is in God. When we leave our our ways and place all of our living into His hands then truly He will be our Rock and Redeemer. But all too often my heart is fixed in my own way.

If God is my salvation, then I must learn to put all things in His hands. God is the Ruler yesterday and today and tomorrow. See the mighty things He has accomplished? He along is my Rock, my Surety, my Fortress from which I can not be shaken.

Help me this day Lord to put my whole being in Your care. I leave it all in Your hands since You are always there. You are strong. You are mighty. You are mighty to save.

Help me live this day in that saving knowledge.

How lovely on the mountains are the feet of Him
    Who brings good news, good news;
Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness:
Our God reigns, our God reigns!
    Refrain

    Our God reigns!
    Our God reigns!
    Our God reigns!
    Our God reigns!
