The way of peace!

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Luke 22:31-38

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“If you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” (Luke 22:36)
Some christians use this verse to support their right to bear arms.
Yet during the arrest, Jesus doesn’t let Peter use the sword (Luke 22:49-51).
Jesus explains WHY they needed swords: “It is written…” (v.37)
In Isaiah 53:12, the Messiah is arrested with transgressors (rebels).
The swords would symbolize rebellion to the authorities.
“Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?” (Luke 22:52).
In other words, ‘are you counting me as a rebel, treating me like a criminal?’
This isn’t about self-defense; how could two swords be enough (v.38)?
As I see it, Jesus is exposing the futility and folly of violence.
“All who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matthew 26:52).
He did not use violence to make peace; he came with humility and grace.
And as weak as this seems to us, he defeated Satan, sin and death!
There may be challenging situations that require some form of self-defense.
But humility and grace are our best defense, the Jesus Way to peace!
PRAYER
Lord, forgive me for thinking that any kind of violence or rebellion will save us. Impress on my heart the way of grace, humility and peace. Help me to overcome evil with good… not more evil.

  1. Knowing that as a follower of Jesus I am not alone makes all the difference! “But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” It is Jesus who prays for me as well – help me Lord to always turn back to you and then to encourage others to turn as well!

  2. God knows His own. He provides for them. He forgives them. Like Peter. Like His disciples. His Word is like a sword. A two edged sword bringing forth His Kingdom. When confronted, we need to be like Jesus and turn the other check. He will provide all what is needed fo He gives His people strength.

1 God, give Your people strength.
If we believe in Your way,
    You’re swift to repay
all those who bear the burden of the day.
    God, give Your people strength.

2 God, give Your people hope.
If we but trust in Your Word,
    our prayers are always heard.
You warmly welcome anyone who’s erred.
    God, give Your people hope.

3 God, give Your people love.
If we but open wide our heart,
You’re sure to do Your part,
and always the first to make a start.
    God, give Your people love.

4 God, give Your people peace.
When sorrow fills us through and through,
    our courage renew.
Come, lay to rest our restlessness in You.
    God, give Your people peace.
