PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: 1 Samuel 17-18
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“It is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves.” (1 Samuel 17:47)
God’s ultimate purpose is to restore the creation kingdom.
Yet God has assigned responsibility of this world to humans.
We humans are unreliable, prone to mess things up.
In the bible we see God working through flawed human partners.
In this story David stands apart as a humble, trusting servant.
As a human partner, he’s not bad… but he’s not perfect either.
God can work with David, despite his bloodied hands.
We should not read these stories as ‘be like David’ moralisms.
The real hero in these stories, and the whole bible, is God.
It was not David’s stones nor his character that defeated Goliath.
It is not the strength of humans that determines our success.
It is not because we are ‘good like David’ that God blesses us.
As long as David was humble, aware of his weakness, he did OK.
As I remain humble, aware of my weakness, his grace will be sufficient.
PRAYER
Lord, you are the real hero for working with me. Thank you for defeating the Goliath of sin for me. Enhance my pebble-like strength to overcome the temptations that come today.
“it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s,” This passage is full of contrasts -i.e., David vs Goliah – Saul’s evil spirit vs David’s and Saul’s jealousy and fear vs Johnathan’s love and trust. I too must choose to listen to God’s spirit and not follow my own heart – rather let my heart be more in tune with that of the HS – that I may more and more seek God’s will!
How quickly we judge other people by their appearance and not by their character. In all things the Lord God needs to be my Guide. I need to walk in His Way and do His will. I need to be intune with the Lord at all times doing His will. And when we see others serving the Lord, there should be no jealousy among serving the Lord. Together we can do more than dividing our purposes. I need to keep my eyes on Jesus at all times doing His will. Help me Lord to stay focussed and not conceited nor jealous of others serving the Lord. Together we serve the risen Saviour in our daily living for Jesus.
We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit
We are one in the Lord
And we pray that all unity
May one day be restored
And they’ll know we are Christians
By our love, By our love
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
By our love
We will walk with each other
We will walk hand in hand
We will walk with each other
We will walk hand in hand
And together we’ll spread the news
That God is in our land
We will work with each other
We will work side by side
We will work with each other
We will work side by side
And we’ll guard each man’s dignity
And save each man’s pride
All praise to the Father
From whom all things come
And all praise to Christ Jesus His only son
And all praise to the Spirit
Who makes us one
Make us one, Lord!
