Servants of Jesus!

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: 2 Kings 3-4

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.” (2 Kings 3:11)
For the nation of Israel, Elijah was one of the greatest prophets.
Here we see how Elisha followed in his master’s footsteps.
This phrase (to pour water on the hands) shows he was a servant of Elijah.
The stories in these chapters show Elisha continuing his master’s ministry.
As followers of Jesus, we see Jesus as the greatest and ultimate prophet.
God declares Jesus, as he stands with Moses and Elijah, the one to listen to.
Like Elisha was to Elijah, we are servants to our master.
And like Elisha we continue the ministry that Jesus began.
Jesus sends out his disciples in the power of the Spirit (John 20:20-21).
We are enabled to do what Jesus did, and even greater things (John 14:12).
But whatever we do, we do as those who pour out water on the hands of Jesus.
In other words, we are not our own masters, we work for the only Master.
“Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 1:1)
How do I continue the work that Jesus began, pouring water on his hands?
PRAYER
Lord, I don’t know how I can do greater things than you did. But I do want to be a useful servant to you. Show me where and how you are sending me today.

  1. In each of the stories – life depended on the word of the Lord. Whether it was sparing the army with provisions of water and defeat of Moab or the bad drinking water or the life of the son of the Shunamite family – Elisha, known by all to be a prophet of the most high God – provided life – water and healing. Elisha was a blessing – and so are we meant to be – a blessing to all whose lives we intersect with! Help us Lord to be faithful ‘blessers’ in the name of Jesus!

  2. Doing the Lord’s will. We are all servants of the king. Listen to the Spirit’s leading. Speak also His words. May others see that we/I am His by our/my words and deeds.

1 Lord, speak to me that I may speak
In living echoes of your tone.
As you have sought, so let me seek
Your erring children, lost and lone.

2 Oh, lead me, Lord, that I may lead
The wand’ring and the wav’ring feet.
Oh, feed me, Lord, that I may feed
Your hungry ones with manna sweet.

3 Oh, teach me, Lord, that I may teach
The precious truths which you impart.
And wing my words that they may reach
The hidden depths of many a heart.

4 Oh, fill me with your fullness, Lord,
    Until my very hearts o’erflows
In kindling thought and glowing word,
Your love to tell, your praise to show.

5 Oh, use me, Lord, use even me,
Just as you will, and when, and where
Until your blessed face I see,
Your rest, your joy, your glory share.
