When I am old and gray…

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 71

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation,” (Psalm 71:18)
David pleads with God for continued value and purpose when he is old.
He may be old, but he can still witness to God’s goodness and glory.
As we get older, we can lose our sense of value and purpose.
Some older people may feel lonely, unappreciated, forgotten.
Or they may lose energy or enthusiasm for doing much of anything.
But Jesus can use even the most frail elderly person…
Even in the old age home, I can show others how great Jesus is!
Encouraging words or notes, a smiling face, a hopeful spirit.
How do my grandchildren experience God through me?
Am I a grumpy complainer, or a gracious encourager?
As my time in life gets smaller, may my heart for God grow bigger!
As my body and mind get weaker, may my faith, hope and love grow stronger!
As long as I am alive, I am a witness for Jesus.
PRAYER
Lord, may the next generation around me experience your goodness through me, so that they can find their hope in you too!

  1. “Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” Grandchildren are a privilege. They need my prayers everyday – as do my children – their parents. It is very difficult when some seem to have no care about matters of faith – of relationship with Jesus. So thankful for when they step forward and make a public declaration of their faith. Yet even then the distractions of life can cause them to veer from the path. Still it is a privilege to have dialogue with them – to listen to them and to continue to pray for them! I do not forsake them and I know God does not either. Bless my children and grandchildren I pray – may they experience your love and power!

  2. Each day is a day of the Lord and I praise Him. As I grow older I see His hand of mercy with greater clarity. I need to tell the story what the Lord God has done for me. His faithfulness. This is the day the Lord has made and I need to share that with those around me in my living for Jesus today and always.

This is the day, this is the day.
That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice,
And be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day
    That the Lord has made.

We are the sons, we are the sons,
Of the living God, of the living God.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice,
And be glad in Him, and be glad in Him.
We are the sons of the living God.
We will rejoice and be glad in Him.
We are the sons, we are the sons
    Of the living God.
