What will I choose?

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 56

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

β€œIn God I trust and am not afraid; what can mere mortals do to me?” (Psalm 56:11)
This is a song about choosing faith over fear, even when under attack.
‘Mere mortals’ are doing a lot to David (vv.5-7), yet he is choosing not to give in to fear.
The word ‘mortals’ reminds me that evil will not last forever, it will end.
But God promises that we will “walk before God in the light of life.” (Psalm 56:13)
I am not under attack by people, but I am feeling spiritually under attack.
The deceiver conspires and lurks, scheming for my ruin and defeat.
In this moment it is easy to give in to fear… will I choose to trust?
The enemy will not ultimately succeed, even if they have lots of temporary successes.
Love will win over hate, goodness over evil, peace over violence, justice over injustice.
Jesus suffers and dies, but suffering and death do not win – he rises in the light of life.
Now is the time for me to sing like David, to express faith over fear, hope over defeat.
Jesus calls me to join him in kingdom grace and service, because he will win in the end.
The waves may threaten to sink me, but if I keep my eyes on Jesus he will hold me up.
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (Psalm 56:1)… will I, will you?
PRAYER
Lord, I see you standing on the waves, and I choose to trust in you. Today I choose to walk before you in the light of life!

  1. David trusted God – but he had his moments. He still faced fear – he was being chased. He had many anxious moments and he made mistakes too. I too get anxious – yet when I look back I see how God took care of me and how He is totally trustworthy. So let me look forward in total trust and cast my anxiety away. Trust in the Lord – cast all my anxiety on Him – and seek first His kingdom!!

  2. I need an attitude of gratitude praising the Lord God for His ‘SonShine’ which lights my way each day. I am always in that SonShine for He is always with me empowering me to live for Jesus. During the last few years I saw many roadside signs expressing the truth – faith over fear. And that can only happen when I walk with my risen Saviour putting my small hand into His large hand. That is comfort. That is my refuge.

1 When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
    he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.

    Refrain:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2 Not a burden we bear,
    not a sorrow we share,
    but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey. [Refrain]
