‘What you are doing is not good!’

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Exodus 17-18

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” (Exodus 18:18)
From the very beginning, it has not been good to work alone (Genesis 2:18).
Yet Satan finds ways to divide us, so that he can defeat us (Genesis 3:1,6).
The division that results from ‘the fall’ continues to divide and defeat us.
Consider all the divisions that we struggle with: male vs female, old vs young.
Leader vs follower, celebrity vs commoner, rich vs poor, black vs white.
Conservative vs liberal, racial, sexual, national and denominational divisions.
Within the church where unity ought to be found in Christ, we are as divided.
Like Israel, we are entering a battlefield, yet we cannot make it work together.
Instead of helping – like Aaron and Hur helped Moses – we attack and undermine.
“You cannot handle it alone”, and yet we act as if we can, and isolate.
In the local church we see some demanding more yet doing less, while others burnout.
We cannot handle it alone, and yet Satan finds ways to burden the few with the many.
What if we saw Jesus as our Moses, and worked together under him, with him and each other?
Instead of thinking that only we can do it right, we need to admit we can’t handle it alone.
PRAYER
Lord, as one that is burning out myself, and yet seeing more and more disagreement and division around me, I cannot help but say, ‘what we are doing is not good!’

  1. How to do my job or my role as a believer – Moses gets good instructions from God through his Father-in-law Jethro: “You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave.” As a Jesus follower I also must see my role not as one of importance or power, but as one of service, as a teacher. Lord help me to stay humble and able to share and teach so that others may come to know you Lord Jesus!

  2. The people saw the greatness of God when He delivered them out of Egypt but soon they grumbled because of the lack of water. How soon they forgot. How soon I too forget what God can do. I need open eyes to see His daily blessings and start naming them one by one rather than complain what I think I am lacking. God is my Provider and I need to bring all of my life to Him in my prayers, in my walk with God. He is here and I need Him every hour. Help me daily Lord to see Your presence and how You continue to care for Your people. You are always among Your people. Emmanuel.

When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
    he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
