The Jesus Way… the better way!

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 26:47-54

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“One of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck…” (Matthew 26:51)
To be honest, I understand why this disciple used his sword.
There are times when I want to fight injustice or cruelty with violence.
Mostly when I watch a good movie, and I feel an evil person needs to be stopped.
But Jesus reminds me that violence does not end violence, it only spreads it.
“For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52)
God could have used violence to end violence, but that would only spread the problem.
God’s way, and the way of Jesus, is to overcome evil with goodness, with love, with grace.
As our world loses its ‘christian’ heritage, some christians reach for their swords.
They ‘fight’ for justice and freedom, and become what they supposedly resist.
I have no solutions for the increase of evil in the world, but joining it will not help.
Jesus leads us on the humble path of goodness, love and grace – as a lamb against wolves.
The Jesus Way works not because it is effective, but because it is God’s Way.
Jesus overcomes by humility and grace, not force and violence – we should do the same.
Jesus still says to us today, “put your sword back in its place!” (Matthew 26:52)
PRAYER
Lord, help me to follow you in the Jesus Way, to show the world the better way. Give me confidence that your way is the better way!

  1. If a kiss could burn this one is it: “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Just thinking what was going on in Jesus mind – but Jesus knew it had to be this way. He had to go through and not be tempted to derail from His mission to rescue us. God wanted to be in fellowship with us – so the sentence of death on sin had to be paid – once and for all. Jesus had that mind so He endured that stinging kiss! Judas would be tormented by it later and kill himself – he could not live with the proceeds from betraying Jesus. Lord help me not be deceived by the philosophies or theologies that would detract from me being fully devoted to you – to being a faithful follower – especially when it is difficult.

  2. Love your enemies – that is a better way.
    Turn the other cheek by showing grace.

    1 Grace and truth shall mark the way
    Where the Lord His own will lead,
    If His word they still obey
    And His testimonies heed.

    2 For Thy name’s sake hear Thou me,
    For Thy mercy, Lord, I wait;
    Pardon my iniquity,
    For my sin is very great.

    3 He who walks in godly fear
    In the path of truth shall go;
    Peace shall be his portion here,
    And his sons all good shall know.

    4 They that fear and love the Lord
    Shall His holy friendship know;
    He will grace to them accord,
    And His faithful covenant show.

    Amen.
