Jesus and wisdom

SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 8
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. [Proverbs 8:23] Solomon urges his son to pay attention to wisdom because wisdom is a part of the very fabric of creation and life; wisdom was woven into the DNA of created reality. It goes back to before time began.

And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. [John 17:5] Jesus makes a similar claim for Himself, and therefore we ought to pay attention to Him too. In fact, He precedes wisdom; or better, wisdom is the outcome of His role in creation. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. [John 1:3] For by him (God’s Son) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. [Colossians 1:16-17]

Jesus is the truth (the word, the wisdom) of God, embodied in the flesh. What He says fits with created reality, it holds together in Him. This is why we need to listen to Jesus. This is what Solomon is saying, though He does not know Jesus or the Son of God; he recognizes Him in the very fabric of reality. Paying attention to reason, wisdom, common sense, is another way of listening to Jesus.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. [John 1:10] And yet, sad to say, we miss the obvious. Solomon has to counsel his son to pay attention because the sad reality is that most of us do not recognize wisdom, do not accept Jesus’ logic woven into life and reality. We are prone to folly, stupidity, blindness, ignorance. We constantly do stupid things. This is why we need help. This is why God had to put together the perfect human object lesson – Jesus. Through Him we see wisdom in action, wisdom personified. The kind of life we were created to live.

PRAYER:
Lord, open my eyes to my folly, help me see where I am deceived. Implant Your wisdom in my heart and mind. Help me to live accordingly.

  1. I am reminded of Solomon’s request for wisdom rather than siver and gold. And he was wise, working the will of the Lord in His life.

    That wisdom is only obtainable through our relationship with the Lord. In Christ Jesus are hid all things. His face I must seek. Happiness is . . . living for Jesus. The joy of the Lord God needs to be my strength today and all my tomorrows. Thank You Lord for the Encourager You’ve given for Your people along the Way Who leads and guides us in the Way we should go.

    The happenings two weeks ago reminded me once again, that You are the treasure I must seek. You are my All in all. May the world continue to see that we are Christians by our love and Lord help me to focus – keeping the main thing the main thing – YOU – are the main ingredient of my life.

    Open my eyes, that I may see
    Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
    Place in my hands the wonderful key
    That shall unclasp and set me free.

    Refrain 1:
    Silently now I wait for Thee,
    Ready my God, Thy will to see,
    Open my eyes, illumine me,
    Spirit divine!

    Open my ears, that I may hear
    Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
    And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
    Everything false will disappear.

    Refrain 2:
    Silently now I wait for Thee,
    Ready my God, Thy will to see,
    Open my ears, illumine me,
    Spirit divine!

    Open my mouth, and let me bear,
    Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
    Open my heart and let me prepare
    Love with Thy children thus to share.

    Refrain 3:
    Silently now I wait for Thee,
    Ready my God, Thy will to see,
    Open my heart, illumine me,
    Spirit divine!
