June 14 — Psalm 121

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 121

OBSERVATION:
When the road is hard, the psalmist looks up, up into the hilly places where Jerusalem was built, where the temple was, symbolic of God’s presence among His people. Here he reminds Himself that the Lord – the one Who made everything – the all-powerful Creator – is watching (5 times), and therefore no matter what seems to be happening day or night (sun or moon), those things cannot ultimately defeat him.

APPLICATION:
This is the kind of confidence that I want, that I need to remind myself of daily. This Psalm is helpful for reinforcing in my heart and mind what life with its challenges and struggles attempts to remove. How often do I tell myself that “nothing can defeat me” while the almighty creator is on my side, watching over me. This psalm does not guarantee an easy life, but it does guarantee that nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8:35-39).

PRAYER:
Lord, I look up to You, and I once again affirm what is often hard to see or feel. I declare by faith that You are watching over me, and that You will guide and protect me as I follow You, until I reach my destination with You. Amen.

  1. Being in a new land, in a new culture, a foreigner, people are a help to me aiding my adjustment. Yet, it is God’s presence that makes the adjustment and desire to continue to do His work here a possibility. I continue to feel protected since I put myself totally in His care. He is always there! As the Psalmist states – He does not slumber nor sleep – yet I do and peacefully at that. He takes care of me! From the time I rise to the time I lay down again, the Psalmist states that the Lord, my God is with me. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! He is my Protector, Preserver, Comforter, as I continue my journey of learning and serving in His Sonshine, standing on His promises. This psalm is an encouragement for all of god’s people who are doing His will in His vineyard. Let us all go forward in His name and in His power. Thank You Lord for Your promises!

    Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
