Sermon on Psalm 32:1-11

I’m preaching on Psalm 32:1-11 this coming Sunday (Feb 11, 2007). Its the daily Bible Reading scheduled for February 3. I would be interested in hearing from you as to what jumps out at you in this passage. What questions does it raise? What do you hear God saying to you in this passage. I suggest keeping your comments brief and clear, and I will try to return the favour on Sunday. Click on Comments to leave your thoughts.

  1. When I walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on my way! Thank You Lord for making me right with You. Thank You for the songs You put into my heart. You are my strength and my All in All. Continue to melt me and mold me after Your will.
When I walk without Him, in my sins, my strength fades away like that of Samson for I am not working in His vineyard. I need to be transparent before the Lord like the prodigal son and be forgiven while there is time. Today is the day to continue my walk in His fellowship, in His presence. Then and only then do I have the peace of mind and protection that I need from day to day for He has promised me to be my Light in my journey of learning if only I trust and obey every day.
Thank You Lord that You are my Strength and Song, encouraging me by Your unfailing presence. Today is the Lord’s Day once again and I will dedicate my all to Him.

  2. I read Psalm 32 at least 3 times before a pattern and certain words “jumped out “at me. It appears that verses 1-4 deal with the Psalmist (David’s) sin. Verses 5 -7 seem to concentrate on the forgiveness aspect. The topic of counsel and instruction is covered in verses 8 and 9. A promise and reason to celebrate end the chapter in verses 10 and 11. This pattern seemed to me a reasonable way to progress through the stages of sin on the way to victory. First we must acknowledge the sin, ask for forgiveness, help others to learn from our mistakes and rejoice in the “Lord’s unfailing love” when we receive grace.
The word “cover” in verses 1and 5 really stood out for me as completely opposite in meaning. In verse one our “sins are covered”. In todays context I can imagine that the sin is still there but it is no longer visible to God. When God looks at us He sees Jesus and His reflection or light covers our sin, regardless of how dark it may be. In verse 2 God “does not count” our sin. It is forgiven forever. When David covered up his sin he suffered terribly with guilt.
I have learned that the longer I wait to come to God and confess my sin ,the more distance I feel between us.
Heavenly Father, I am so glad that we can come to you anytime and confess our sin and ask wholeheartedly for your forgiveness. How wonderful that you cover my sins and they are not counted against me. Help me to come more freely to you. Thank you Jesus for the victory that we have over sin because of you. Amen.
