THE STORY OF JESUS: Luke 1:1-4
“I too decided to write an orderly account for you.” (Luke 1:3)
I love thinking about Luke, and how he came become a messenger of Jesus.
Luke was a doctor (Colossians 4:14), and a fellow worker with Paul (Philemon 1:24).
When Paul was left alone (and abandoned by Demas), only Luke stay with him (2 Timothy 4:11).
He wrote both this Gospel, and the book of Acts, more than any other NT author.
As a trained physician, he notices more medical details than the other gospel writers.
And here he puts his research skills to use to write an ‘orderly account’.
We don’t know how Luke came to follow Jesus, but he surrenders his skills to the Lord.
Because of Luke, we can “know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:4)
Each author tells the story through their eyes, as inspired by the Spirit of Jesus.
The fact that Luke was not one of the original 12 encourages me (the same with Paul).
The Lord’s plan from the beginning was to spread His message through multiple generations.
This includes me, this includes you… we all can share Jesus with other Theophilus’s.
How have I experienced Jesus, what has the Lord done for me – this is my testimony.
As I write the story of Jesus with my life, others will follow, and join the team!
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, may Your story be evident through me, as I share Your part in my story. May others know You with certainty in their own lives too, so that Your fame may spread “to the ends of the earth!” (Acts 1:8)
Many have undertaken to draw up an account and Luke is one of them. Their story shared were eye witnesses of Jesus. One way to know the story is to experience it and the other way is to listen to the witnesses who experienced Jesus. And so Luke writes his story to convince.
And my story. How do I live my story? I have heard the story of Jesus and do I live it? Do others see Jesus in me? I too am a living witness – an epistle – read by all. What is my account like? Am I a steppingstone or a stumbling block for the gospel?
I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love;
I love to tell the story, because I know ’tis true,
It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do.
Refrain:
I love to tell the story,
’Twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story
Of Jesus and His love.
I love to tell the story, more wonderful it seems
Than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams;
I love to tell the story, it did so much for me,
And that is just the reason I tell it now to thee.
I love to tell the story, ’tis pleasant to repeat,
What seems each time I tell it more wonderfully sweet;
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.
I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest;
And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,
’Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.
