Hope for the oppressed!

THE STORY OF JESUS: Psalm 59
“Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules!” (Psalm 59:13)
This song reminds me of the slave songs (‘negro spirituals’).
They had no hope (humanly speaking) and endured unspeakable horror.
Their only hope was to escape from this life…
‘Swing low, sweet chariot, gonna come and bring me home!’
David prays for protection (“refuge”) and justice (“show no mercy”).
From where I sit, I cannot relate to David’s cry, nor to the slave songs.
But their spirit of hope despite terrible circumstances inspires me.
All through history victims of cruelty and injustice have cried out to God.
David wants the world to know there IS a God (v.11,13)!
Jesus came to remind us that there is a God, a God of justice and mercy!
Jesus demonstrated the love of God, through compassion for the oppressed.
Jesus demonstrated the love of God, through rebuke of the oppressors.
Jesus demonstrated the love of God, dying for sin to rescue us all from Satan’s grip!
If only the world knew THIS God, cruelty and oppression would end!
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, show Yourself to those who are oppressed, that they may be strengthened. Show Yourself to those who oppress, that they may be humbled!

  1. At all times
    In all situations
God is my strength and song.
    He is my fortress
    My strong tower
    where the righteous run
    and are saved.
Daily I need to seek His presence.
Daily I need to talk with my God.
At all times He is the wind beneath my wings
for I live in His presence.
    Emmanuel.
I need to live that each day anew
    in the good times
    and
in the bad times when I struggle
for the joy of the Lord God is my strength
    and song.

Christ be beside me, Christ be before me,
Christ be behind me, King of my heart.
Christ be within me, Christ be below me,
Christ be above me, never to part.

Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand,
Christ all around me, shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting,
Christ in my rising, light of my heart.

Christ be in all hearts thinking about me,
Christ be on all tongues telling of me.
Christ be the vision in eyes that see me,
In ears that hear me Christ ever be.
