Lest we forget…

HolydaysTHE STORY OF JESUS: Esther 9:23-28
“These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city.” (Esther 9:28)
Holy days (or holidays) are set to help people remember special occasions.
Purim and Passover for Jews, Eid and Ramadan for Muslims, Christmas and Easter for Christians.
Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Family Day, Martin Luther King Day, Remembrance (or Memorial) Day.
The intent is not to forget these things every other day, but to keep the memories strong.
Time has a way of making people forget.
Often the remnants of the holy day linger on beyond the memories.
People – like Christmas and Easter Christians – observe only that day, but for different reasons.
Then we need to be reminded of the reason for the season.
If the event or person remembered is not so important – like Lord Simcoe Day – it matters not.
But if we forget the cause of MLK, or the high cost of war, the value of thanksgiving or family…
And if we as Christians forget Jesus life, death and resurrection… that matters a lot.
The Enemy delights in making us forget with the very days meant to help us remember.
Any way to take our eyes off Jesus, and keep us distracted by lesser things.
When I grew up, we also celebrated Pentecost and Ascension Day – days forgotten by now.
This May 5, we celebrate the Lordship of Jesus, with His ascension to the Father’s throne.
This May 15, we celebrate the Jesus sending the Spirit of Life to fill us and the world.
“These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family, and in every province and in every city.” (Esther 9:28)
Lest we forget…
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, You are King, and Your Spirit is at work in us and through us to rebuild Your Kingdom. How sad that we forget these most important realities. No wonder our faith and work as Christians seem so weak.
