Last first

THE STORY OF JESUS: Esther 9:1-4
“The tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them.” (Esther 9:1)
Have you ever been at the bottom of the pecking order?
The butt of jokes, picked last for the team, ignored or laughed at?
I have been there a few times, and I have also known others that were.
Is it sweet revenge when the tables are turned?
I have found myself wishing that this is what would happen – tables turned on bullies.
“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19)
We should not seek revenge, since we become consumed by negative energy and hate.
But a desire for justice is valid… just remember that we will face it too.
Mary is reminded of this when she is told that she will give birth to the Messiah.
By choosing her, and not some rich, beautiful queen or princess, God shows His love for the humble.
“He he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant… He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.” (Luke 1:48,51-53)
Today’s reading from Esther is another reminder of God’s purpose and plan.
Think about the underdogs and oppressed of today, the ones at the bottom of our world’s pecking order.
A day is coming when the tables will be turned…
“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:31)
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, its easy to think about how others will be brought low, but show me where I am higher than others, and where I am guilty of looking down or hurting others from my privileged position.
