Listening to my counsellor

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 119:1-24
“Your statutes are my delight; they are my counsellors.” (Psalm 119:24)
A counsellor is someone who helps us on our journey through life towards wholeness.
The sacred writings (‘graphe’, scriptures) of the bible (‘biblos’, books) do this too.
The bible is not a science textbook, nor is it an ‘answer book’ for all our questions.
It is a collection of writings and stories by authors spanning 1500 years.
This Psalm refers to the Torah, the first five books of the bible.
It contains stories, statutes, laws, commands, decrees, all of which convey God’s message.
There is wisdom to be found here, wisdom for living, not just for learning.
Hearing the words, learning the words, is not enough – we are to live its message.
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)
“These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.” (1 Corinthians 10:11)
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

By reading the bible, open to the Voice of Jesus, we are:
-1- encouraged with hope
-2- warned of dangers
-3- equipped for good living
Delight in, dig into, devour the wisdom contained within the bible.
But don’t just listen to it, do what it says!
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, You are my counsellor, and I can hear Your voice through scripture. Help me to listen, and with Your help, to live what You are saying to me.
