Taking God seriously

godSCRIPTURE: Psalm 101
In this Psalm, David is sharing how serious he is about God.
It sounds like he is bragging, and maybe he is.
We know from the story of his life that he did not always live or act this way.
I would not recommend singing about your devotion this way in church.
But what he expresses here is helpful, if it encourages us to take God seriously too.
To see sin and dangerous, to see morality as important, to do what it takes to stay on the right path.
Sometimes the message of grace lulls us into apathy and indifference.
As if no matter how bad we sin, God will forgive us anyway.
Forgiveness is free, but it takes effort to hold on to it.
If I put $100 in your hand, it is yours, a free gift.
But unless I wrap my hand around it, and do something with it, I will drop it, lose it.
Grace is free, but we need to take hold of it, invest it, allow it to work itself in us.
We have everything we need to live differently, with God’s help, if we take Him seriously.
We do not need to earn salvation, but we do need to work it out.
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Philippians 2:12-13)
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, You have graced me beyond my deserving. Help me to take You and Your salvation seriously. Help me to seek it, not just talk about it.

  1. Observation/Application
Once again I will sing – – – and this time of faithfulness. My faithfulness to live every day as a day of the Lord. My eyes will focus on what is right and good and true. I will stand up for Jesus. As for me and my household, we will serve the living God. Each day anew I will stand in His Way.
Help me Lord to walk in Your SonShine always, standing up for what is right and true. Use me as an instrument of Your peace.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength alone,
    The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own;
Put on the gospel armor, and watching unto prayer,
Where calls the voice of duty, be never wanting there.
