pursued but protected

SCRIPTURE: Revelation 12
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. [Revelation 12:13-14]
This vision is an amazing retelling of the whole story of salvation: the woman (Israel) that produces the child (Messiah), the child brought up to His throne in heaven, the dragon (Satan) defeated and fighting against the woman (Israel/Church) because of the child, and the woman protected for a season from the dragon’s attacks.
Jesus reigns, Satan is defeated, but he is fighting mad, and will take down anyone and everyone he can.
Right now, he is raging on earth, like a lion looking for people to devour [1 Peter 5:8].
But so long as the people of the “male child” cling to Him in faith, they will be protected… the very creation order itself will help them.
Life in this world will be a wilderness, but while pursued, they will be protected.

You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. [Luke 21:16-18]
Hated because of the male child, pursued and persecuted – even by loved ones – because of Jesus.
But not a hair of your head will perish, that is, you will be fully rescued in the end.
Betrayed, even put to death, yet not a hair will perish?
This is not contradictory; rather Jesus is saying that we will suffer and even die, but in the end we will be fully restored (remember the witnesses of ch.11?).
This makes me think of how Paul experienced both hardship and hope.
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. [2 Corinthians 4:8-11]

We need to think of our daily lives in light of this cosmic battle, and we need to see that though we are pursued, we are protected.
Keep reminding yourself of this when life gets hard, and things do not seem to be working out as you hoped.
Or when you are under attack, keep the eyes of your heart focused on Jesus in the highest place, directing the affairs of this world so that in the end we will stand!
In the meantime, keep doing good, and wait for the Lord’s return.
If we suffer for doing good, so be it – we are blessed!
So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. [1 Peter 4:19]
This is my job, until the Lord returns, through all the attacks of the devil.
Trust and obey, for there is no other way.

PRAYER:
Lord, this is so applicable for me today, as I am facing doubt and defeat in my heart. I need to continue to be faithful, to trust and obey, and leave the results to You!

  1. The battle retold.

Satan fighting for his dominion, his rule and was cast from heaven, but the fight continues, not among the angels but among the people of God. The battle continues upon the earth for a time, for we know our Saviour reigns. But in the meantime . . .

God’s people must hold fast to their testimony because the battle is continuing also today, until He returns to claim His own. Until then i/we need to go forward in His power and in His name placing Him first in our lives. The battle continues but as He promised, He is with His people giving them strength. As the river was swallowed up – the attacks of the devil – so God will deliver His own. But the battle continues and I need to hold fast to the promises of God for He is my Protector, Deliverer, Saviour, Stronghold, Fortress, Tower, my ALL in all.

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

    Refrain:
    Standing, standing,
    Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
    Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I now can see
    Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.
