who’s more reliable?

SCRIPTURE: Jeremiah 33
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, then my covenant with David my servant—and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. [Jeremiah 33:20-21]
Through Jeremiah, God makes it clear that just as His commitment to the creation is unchanging, so is His commitment to His covenant promise.
God promised Abraham that his descendants would be as the stars in the sky, or the sand on the seashore, and that promise will not fail.
I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’” [Jeremiah 33:22]

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. [Matthew 5:17-18]
Jesus echoes the same commitment of God to fulfill His words.
Even though at times it may seem as if God is working against His covenant, in actual fact everything is, and always will be, according to the plan.
Just as His covenant with the day and the night (or His covenant with heaven and earth) will not disappear, so every letter, every stroke of the pen (i.e. the written promises and commands) will come true, be fulfilled.

When God makes a promise, He keeps it.
At times it may seem as if God is working contrary to His promises (like when Jerusalem fell, or when Jesus taught about the Law).
But appearances are deceiving, God is not unstable or unreliable.
If things seem to be working contrary to God’s promise or purpose, the problem is with our perspective, not God’s faithfulness.
When we view and interpret the things that happen to us or around us from our own limited perspective, we are troubled.
But when we see these same things in the context of God’s purpose and promise, then we hang on with hope, even when hard or confusing.

The issue here is trust.
If God is reliable, then we have hope; if God is not reliable, then He is not God, or good, and not worth worshiping.
Some people may prefer to rely on their own faulty perspective, power and purpose, but given our (my) track record, that seems foolish.
Better to trust God’s reliability, as seen in His faithfulness in creation – day and night, heaven and earth – than to trust in our own schemes and devices.
Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. [Joshua 24:15]

PRAYER:
Lord, when in doubt, I choose to trust You.

  1. Do I see the hand of God in all things?

    The people in captivity, lost their possessions, suffering, away from their homeland -where is God in all of this? But the Lord God tells them that He will bring health and healing for His people and they will enjoy peace and security and rebuild and the people will be joyful. But what do I see?

    The people were not yet experiencing what was promised, but they were standing on the promises of God.

    “Give thanks to the LORD Almighty,
    for the LORD is good;
    his love endures forever.”

    We have His Word and we saw that it came to pass. I have His Word. I have His promise. It too will come to pass. On those promised I stand this day. Help me to see Your hand always Lord as I live in Tour presence.

    Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
    Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
    Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
    Standing on the promises of God.

    Refrain:
    Standing, standing,
    Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
    Standing, standing,
    I’m standing on the promises of God.

    Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
    When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
    By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
    Standing on the promises of God.

    Standing on the promises I now can see
    Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
    Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
    Standing on the promises of God.
