PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 5
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“You have heard that it was said… But I tell you…” (Matthew 5:21-22)
What Jesus des here would have been shocking to his audience.
He sets his views beyond Moses and the religious traditions.
In some cases, he goes further than these Moses and tradition.
In one case (‘eye for eye’.v.38) he says the opposite.
How can Jesus go beyond or against God’s revelation/Word?
Unless he himself is the Word made flesh, God with us (John 1:1f).
God through Jesus is revealing the limitations of the Law.
Jesus, not Moses, is the clearest and fullest revelation of God.
As Jesus followers, Jesus is our biggest authority, the truth of God.
We need to filter all we read from the bible through Jesus.
He goes beyond the righteousness of religion to God’s call to love.
I am a Jesus follower, not a Moses, Paul or church follower.
Moses, Paul and the church point me to Jesus… I hear what they say.
But I always eagerly listen for Jesus’s, “but I tell you!”
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, you are the Voice of God, showing me the Heart of God. Take me beyond the limits of rules and religion, and help me to love like God loves!
