The most excellent way!

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 5

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
As followers of Jesus, do we have to follow the Law of Moses?
According to the first disciples who heard Jesus, the answer is NO.
See Acts 15:10-11,28-29, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Galatians 3:23-25.
But does this mean that we can do whatever we want then?
The answer again is NO, for we are now motivated by the heart of the Law.
The Law was given to point the people towards loving their neighbour.
All the Law and the Prophets hang on this command to love (Matthew 22:37-40).
If you love others like Jesus loved us, you will not harm them (Romans 13:8-10).
This is how Jesus fulfills the Law, by loving people to death.
The Law and the Prophets can still serve as teaching aids, pointing to love.
This is how Jesus reads the law in the following paragraphs.
But love goes beyond following the rules; love sacrifices itself for others.
For the weak, for the poor, for the wicked, for our enemies… like Jesus.
Love is the most excellent way, the better way the Law was pointing.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, following you is not about following the rules but about loving people like you did. When we love people, we will not lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery, dishonour, etc.
