PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 5
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“Blessed are the… for theirs is…” (Matthew 5:3)
Jesus begins his teaching in a surprising way.
The people the world sees as cursed are actually the blessed ones.
The people listed here are not usually the winners in life.
Some of these qualities are virtues: peacemaker, merciful.
Some of them are not: poor in spirit, mourning, persecuted.
But all of them – the good and the bad – are weak.
In a survival of the fittest world, these people are the losers.
These are the people the world walks over or takes advantage of.
Yet according to Jesus, these are the ones God walks with, blesses!
Jesus leads an upside down kingdom, where the last become first.
The humbled and the gracious will overcome in the end.
The proud and the powerful will be brought down, humbled.
God through Jesus chooses to associate with the weak, the rejected.
As followers of Jesus, being with Jesus means doing the same.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, strengthen me to walk with the weak like you in the same Spirit of humility and grace. Help me to trust that when we are weak, then you are strong!
