The genealogy of Jesus

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Matthew 1

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah.” (Matthew 1:1)
Matthew wants to show that Jesus is God’s promised one.
God promised that a human would come to crush the serpent (Genesis 3:15).
Matthew uses the genealogy to show that Jesus was fully human.
Yet he is more than human, he is conceived by God, ‘God with us!’
As a son of Abraham, he is the blessing for the nations (Genesis 12:1-3).
As a son of David, he is the coming ‘forever’ king (2 Samuel 7:12-13).
Matthew reinforces this by highlighting 14 generations (Matthew 1:17).
The numerical value for David (D-V-D) equals 14 (look up gematria).
This is a literary technique, not the actual number of generations.
Jesus is God’s anointed one (Hebrew = messiah; Greek = christ).
Anointed means specially set apart and empowered by God’s Spirit.
Matthew wants me to believe that Jesus is the one, the Saviour!
The one to crush the serpent, reverse the curse, and set me free.
Do I believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the promised one… for me?
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, this is not just a history lesson. This is your story, and my story too. It all fits together, the unfolding of God’s Master Plan. You are the one… for me!
