PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 40
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire… I desire to do your will…” (Psalm 40:6,8)
David makes an interesting distinction between the Lord’s will and parts of the law.
Sacrifice and offering were in the Moses Law, but it seems the Lord does not desire them.
David also adds “your law is within my heart.” (Psalm 40:8)
The Law of God is the law of love, to love God and neighbour with our whole being.
David knows that he falls short of God’s law, but his heart is set on it.
He struggles because of his own sin, and the sins of others against him.
But he knows that he is loved by the the Lord, and tells everyone (Psalm 40:10).
In Jesus we see the heart of the law fulfilled, not just the words of the commands.
The author of Hebrews applies these words from Psalm 40 to Jesus (Hebrews 10:8-10).
He then says that Jesus “sets aside the first to establish the second.” (Hebrews 10:9)
The first is the outward form of the law, the second is the heart of the law.
Jesus does what love would do, including sacrificing himself for all sinners, once for all!
As we struggle in an unloving world, his will for us is that we would love like he does.
We humbly offer our imperfect selves to love God and others, trusting God to raise us up!
PRAYER
Lord, it seems that too often we focus on bible adherence rather than faithful love and mercy for sinners. Help me to admit my falling short, to trust your love, and to share it with others!
David – as a fugitive – running for safety from King Saul- appeals for God’s help – yet even then he openly testifies of God’s hand of protection: “I proclaim your saving acts…” David can – he has experienced God’s protection numerous times – whether from the lion or from the enemy or even from Saul. He also realizes his on need for protection from sinning. I too need that. I need to avoid things that can compromise and distract me. Lord keep me faithful I pray! May I also openly declare your grace to me so that others to may desire to know you Lord Jesus!
Seek the Lord.
Rejoice and be glad. The Lord is great. He is my God, my Helper, my Deliverer, my Redeemer. Look and see what the Lord has done in my life. Those I need to declare. I need to do His will each day for His law is written upon my heart. Seek Him in all things. He is great and greatly to be praised. He is my Help and Deliverer and I will praise Him. May all around me see that I am living for Jesus.
Oh God You Are My God
And I Will Ever Praise You
