walking with the wise

SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 13
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. [Proverbs 13:20] Today I want to think about what it means to “walk” with Jesus. Obviously, He is not here with us on earth in a body, so we cannot see, hear or be with Him in this way. But we can still “walk” with the Lord, if we relate with Him through every part of our day, wherever we go, whatever we do. Right now, as I write this, I am with Him, He is with me. I also believe that He is speaking to me through the bible, and energizing me through His Spirit. I want to learn from His wisdom, I want to grow wise!

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. [John 6:66-68] Accepting what Jesus has to say has never been easy. Even for those who were with Him, what He said was challenging, difficult, demanding. On this occasion, His words were so tough that many of those who were following Him turned back. It was too hard, they gave up. They went back to their former “masters”. They rejected His wisdom, and looked elsewhere. Sadly, they likely became companions to fools…

Walking with Jesus is hard. What He says is hard. Hearing Him is hard. Doing what He says is hard. For some, it is easier to give up, to walk away, to look elsewhere. But where do you turn? To whom shall they go? I believe Jesus’ life and teaching are the key to life, and hope, and peace, and joy! I believe that He is the One that can save us! To whom else shall we go? He has the words of life. To walk with Him, one becomes wise!

To “walk” with an invisible Jesus is hard, but not impossible. With determination, persistence, commitment, it can become more natural, more ingrained in my daily patterns. The more time I spend with Him, the wiser I become.

PRAYER:
Lord, Master, let me walk with Thee! Make me wise, and protect me from harm.

  1. Choices. God first or self first. For whom do I live?

I must be a person of integrity which must be seen by my knowing/loving/doing – my head/my heart/my hands. Teach me O Lord Thy Way of Truth and from it I will not depart. As the passage for today states – a wise child heeds a parent’s instruction, so I must heed my Father’s instruction.

When I walk in His Way, in the Light of His Word, that Light will never be snuffed out. Although it may grow cloudy, it will always be there. That cloudness is my perception, my doing. Following that Light, listening to the Giver of that Light is the fountain of Life. Help me in my walk this day, Lord. I want to walk with my risen Saviour. Help me throughout this day WWJD. As we begin anew, to rebuild lives here, homes here, schools here, relationships here – put You first. May all who go forth to rebuild Haiti be people of integrity. Let Your Light shine!

Lord, the light of your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness, shining
Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us
Set us free by the truth you now bring us

Shine on me, shine on me
    Shine, Jesus, shine
Fill this land with the Father’s glory
    Blaze, Spirit, blaze
    Set our hearts on fire
    Flow, river, flow
Flood the nations with grace and mercy
    Send forth your word
Lord, and let there be light

Lord, I come to your awesome presence
From the shadows into your radiance
By the blood I may enter your brightness
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness
Shine on me, shine on me

As we gaze on your kingly brightness
So our faces display your likeness
Ever changing from glory to glory
Mirrored here may our lives tell your story
Shine on me, shine on me
