‘I could just eat you up!’

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: John 6:52-59

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.” (John 6:56)
Jesus uses very graphic language, but it seems clear he is speaking figuratively.
Like the expressions ‘you’re so cute I could eat you up!’ or ‘devouring a book’.
Jesus’s flesh and blood (physical body) is the embodiment of God’s grace.
Out of love God becomes flesh and dwells among us, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
But do we embrace God’s grace and truth, do we fully take it in?
Like a hungry person devouring a meal, like a thirsty person gulping in water.
Or like a newborn baby, craving milk (1 Peter 2:2)
Jesus talks about ‘coming’ to him, ‘believing’ in him and ‘remaining’ in him. (6:35,56)
Consuming Jesus is not just a one-time act or decision, we live and grow in him.
Like the branch remaining in the vine (John 14), we live off of his life.
And his life produces fruit in us – life goodness, grace and truth.
For me the lesson is that I need to focus on, cling to and shape my life around Jesus.
Of course his words about eating his flesh and drinking his blood is spiritual language.
But the results are not just spiritual, they will show in my flesh and blood too.
PRAYER
Lord, you’re so good I can eat you up! The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in you, for you love me and gave yourself for me.

  1. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them” I need to be filled with Jesus. So many images of being a vessel, a temple, an ambassador – of having Jesus coming into me. The intimacy is amazing – and it is. I can only think of the HS working within. Lord Jesus, yes, I need you every hour – every hour I need you – so bless me now my Savior…come quickly and abide, or life is vain… (PSH 427).

  2. Jesus is my All in all. Without Him I am dead. All those who do not live for Jesus are like dead men for it is is in Him I/we have life and life eternal. I need to continue to grow in Him in order to live for Him. I am not my own but His. Living for Jesus. Growing in Christ. Empowered by His Spirit.

    All for Jesus! All for Jesus!
    All my being’s ransomed pow’rs;
    All my thoughts and words and doings,
    All my days and all my hours.
    All for Jesus! All for Jesus!
    All my days and all my hours.
    All for Jesus! All for Jesus!
    All my days and all my hours.
    2
    Let my hands perform His bidding;
    Let my feet run in His ways;
    Let mine eyes see Jesus only;
    Let my lips speak forth His praise.
    All for Jesus! All for Jesus!
    Let my lips speak forth His praise.
    All for Jesus! All for Jesus!
    Let my lips speak forth His praise.
