PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Proverbs 1-2
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“Out in the open wisdom calls aloud…” (Proverbs 1:20)
The Creator has designed the universe with wisdom built right in.
There is a ‘common sense’ evident in life that anyone can see.
If people actually thought through their ways, they would see it.
But we tend not to think through our ways, we act on impulse or desire.
Wisdom tells us that all bad deeds eventually get exposed.
Wisdom tells us that violence, anger and unforgiveness do not help.
Wisdom tells us that selfishness, greed and lust lead to misery.
Wisdom tells us that cheating, lying, stealing come back to haunt us.
Wisdom calls aloud, yet so often we ignore or refuse it.
Wisdom is the Voice of Jesus – the Word of God – embedded in creation.
I believe everyone hears his Voice, urging us to rethink and change our ways!
Through Solomon’s sayings, Jesus is challenging us to think about our lives.
He is showing us the folly of human ways, and urging us to follow him!
He is inviting us into his way of living, loving and leading in God’s world.
PRAYER
Lord, these opening words are calling me to rethink the wisdom of how I am living. Help me to hear your voice calling me toward better paths.
Wisdom will spare us. Lord fill us with your wisdom, help us let go of our own “smarts” and rely on you!
All knowledge – all creation has its source in its creator – our sovereign God – He is the source of knowledge and wisdom. Science discovers and unravels more understanding – it only opens the book – the Book is God’s – what science attributes to the laws of nature. How can I discern what I learn, the theories and hypotheses that are offered each day – the understanding of the atom – physics etc. The more complex the more I marvel and raise hands of praise to the majesty of the Creator. Forgive Lord for sometimes acting like I know something. What I really know is that I know nothing on my own – but only through what you bless me with – for you are the source!
Trusting knowledge without understanding seems to be the order of the day and I find our society (and far too often myself) knowledge collectors, missing the treasure that comes from the hard work of listening to understand and seeking wisdom. It reminds me of a story I once heard about not being able to lift even the smallest pebble with only one finger, cannot be done alone no matter how strong the single finger is. The call to wisdom is a call to balance, vulnerability, humility and work. I pray that I become willing to search for this treasure and to delight it it’s surprises.
‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge.’.
I am reminded of Joshua who was full of the spirit of wisdom. He and his household served the Lord all the days of his life. God was that source of wisdom. Listen to Him and the journey will continue in joy for the jy of the Lord God is my strength.
Verse 1
The perfect wisdom of our God
Revealed in all the universe
All things created by His hand
And held together at His command
He knows the mysteries of the seas
The secrets of the stars are His
He guides the planets on their way
And turns the earth through another day
Verse 2
The matchless wisdom of His ways
That mark the path of righteousness
His word a lamp unto my feet
His Spirit teaching and guiding me
And O the mystery of the cross
That God should suffer for the lost
So that the fool might shame the wise
And all the glory might go to Christ
Verse 3
O grant me wisdom from above
To pray for peace and cling to love
And teach me humbly to receive
The sun and rain of Your sovereignty
Each strand of sorrow has a place
Within this tapestry of grace
So through the trials I choose to say
