July 3 — Acts 7:1-16

SCRIPTURE: Acts 7:1-16

OBSERVATION:
Stephen has just been accused of “speaking against the holy place and against the law” (6:13). He responds by reminding them of Israel’s history, that God’s dealings with His people have not been based on holy observances or places, but on God’s promise and the peoples’ response. Abraham never even saw the land that was promised, and Joseph and his family live most of their lives in Egypt. In other words, our relationship wit God is not based on temples or laws, but God’s promise and our faith in His promise. Paul (who was listening to Stephen at the time, named Saul, 8:1) later on makes the same argument in Galatians 3:15-18).

APPLICATION:
How often do we not mistake the religious observances and practices for the real thing. How often do we not judge others by how they observe the rituals and rules that we value. We are urged not to judge others based on these things, but to seek a relationship with Jesus, the real thing (Colossians 2:16-17). I am married not because I wear a wedding ring or possess a marriage license, I am married because I am in a love relationship with my wife – these symbols just point to that reality; similarly with Jesus, going to church or following rules does not make you a Christ-follower, but a personal relationship with Him as Saviour and Lord does.

PRAYER:
Lord, forgive me for getting distracted by religious practices and observances, and for not strengthening my relationship with You. I know that I am a weak partner in this relationship, but help me to grow! Amen.
