SCRIPTURE: Psalm 126
OBSERVATION:
When the pilgrims returned from captivity in Babylon to Israel, they were overjoyed. But their joy is incomplete as long as the nation remains weak and desperate, the temple a sorry sight compared to its original glory (see Haggai 2:1-9). As the pilgrims ascend the hills to the temple, they go with tears of sadness and anticipation, trusting that the God who restored them to the land will also restore their fortunes. They are planting seeds in faith, trusting God for the harvest of blessing.
APPLICATION:
This Psalm is especially helpful for those who have been through a rough time, and though they have seen God’s hand in some ways, they are still in the wilderness, still awaiting God’s help, God’s blessing. Like the Psalmist, we need to continue to trust and serve God (as seen in his continued worship at the unimpressive temple), and not allow our circumstances to discourage and defeat us. Although it may not look like it yet, God’s day is coming, and yours will too, if you persevere in trusting and serving Him.
PRAYER:
Lord, there are times when I am discouraged, even on the border of defeat, when I do not see Your ‘church’ as it should be, when the world spirit seems to have a stronger influence than Your Spirit. Help me to persevere, to keep on ‘ascending’ in faith, and to remember Your promise, “I will build my Church!” Amen.
