SCRIPTURE: Psalm 123
OBSERVATION:
It is interesting that even though the writer is being treated with contempt by the proud and arrogant (vv.3-4), he still humbles himself before God as a slave before his master, or a maid before her mistress. How do we see ourselves before God? See Luke 17:7-10 for another picture of how people need to see themselves before God.
APPLICATION:
Do I see myself as an unworthy servant before the Lord, only doing my duty? Or do I somehow expect a reward for the sacrifices and services that I have offered to God? Will I feel jealous if someone who has done less than me gets the same welcome and reward as me, as if I deserve more (see Matthew 20:1-16)? No one should be treated as greater or lesser, since we are all equally unworthy before God.
PRAYER:
Lord, if I am honest with myself, I do pride myself on the sacrifices and services that I offer You. I hesitate to say, ‘humble me, Lord’, yet that is probably what I should say. Be merciful to me, Lord, and help me see myself (and others) as I ought to. Amen.
