SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 5:1-14

OBSERVATION:
Peter seems to be addressing adice to certain groups in particular, the leaders, young men and those who are suffering for their faith.
Peter identifies himself as a fellow elder, not as the chief apostle, one of Jesus’ inner circle, nor as God’s representative on earth.
Were church leaders already then turning their role into a way of making money – considering the high cost of becoming a Christian.
Several practical commands: be submissive, be humble, cast all anxiety on God, be self-controlled and alert, resist the devil.
Advice to the persecuted church, ”stand firm”, the day is coming when God will set things right.
Peter reminds them of the good news of grace, then urges them to stand fast in it, don’t let the devil push you around.

APPLICATION:
God is challenging me as a Church Leader (fellow elder) to renew my commitment to Him and to serving His Church.
I need to check my motives and methods as a church leader, to see whether I am diligent, eager, willing, selfless, serving as a humble model, not lording it over others. Maybe I should ask someone else to tell me what they see and hear in me.
Am I aware of the danger I am in, that the devil is prowling around looking for ways to trap and destroy me. Am I alert, or do I live without awareness of my spiritual danger?

PRAYER:
Lord, there is a spiritual battle raging in and around me, though often I don’t like it. Help me to be self-controlled and alert, to entrust my life and security to You, and to trust that You will make me strong, firm and steadfast! Amen.
