God’s flawed partners… and one exception

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Genesis 19-21
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“For he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live.” (Genesis 20:7)
What strikes me in these stories is how twisted the ‘heroes’ are.
Lot offering his daughters to the men of Sodom, his daughters impregnated by their dad.
Abraham lying about his aged wife, and driving away his son Ishmael into the desert.
Yet God aligns himself in covenant with these people.
God designed this world to be led by humans (Genesis 1:26-28).
After human rebellion, God decided to keep working with/through humans.
But He has to work with what He can find, and we can get pretty twisted.
God’s rescue operation depends on flawed partners whom God uses to help the world.
But as flawed partners, we cannot save the world, we only spread the mess.
Jesus is the one exception, uniquely born (like Adam and Eve), a fresh start.
He is a prophet unlike any other, He dies so that we will live.
Jesus, not Abraham, not Moses, not Peter, not me… Jesus is our only hope.
And because of Jesus, God continues to work through flawed servants like us.
Even through our twisted stories, God can bring healing and hope to the world.
PRAYER
Lord, thank You for stepping in to be the perfect prophet to beat Satan and sin and reclaimed creation for God for us. Thank You for reminding me that my flaws do not disqualify me.

  1. Can’t help but think how much we like to be in control of our situation – or we are oblivious to the influences on us – the compromises that we make. Sometimes, we need to be completely pulled away – I need time-outs with God – to let go and let God. Yet, God can turn around even the lousiest decision I ever made and helped me overcome its consequences. God is faithful and chooses to work through his ‘sin-flawed’ children. It is true that when I’m weak and humbled – then I’m strong as Jesus guides and leads me to the better way!

  2. The following song came to my mind while reading today’s passage. He is in control and not I!

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master, today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!
Power, all power, surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o’er my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me

  3. We, humans, have a tendency to desire control over our lives and forget to trust God and His faithfulness, protection and providence. Lord Jesus, help me to wait in Your words; help me to trust You because You are the Sovereign One and Your plans are far better than mine.
