PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Psalm 2
What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?
“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” (Psalm 2:6)
David is speaking about himself, but this psalm ultimately points to Jesus.
I believe Jesus is now in charge of the world, after beating sin, Satan and death.
And yet many people would laugh at this – where is this ruling King?
People live as they please, leaders conspire and plot, with no regard for God or people.
I still believe that Jesus reigns, but not like humans with power and violence.
He rules like God, with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…
He works through the humble, the lowly, the weak to overcome evil (Romans 12:9-21).
He is working behind the scenes in humble loving people all over the world.
Every act of kindness, every sacrifice of love, every demonstration of grace… is Jesus!
Jesus is a servant king, and those who serve with Him, reign with Him.
Jesus is Lord, and good will triumph in/through Him, whether we welcome it or not.
Either we will join in with its gradual rise… or be swept away by its current.
This psalm issues a warning to those who refuse to join Him in His good kingdom?
Am I ruling with Jesus, like Jesus, for Jesus… in the God-like way of love?
PRAYER
Lord, help me to see that I am actually ruling with You, and overcoming evil with You, when I humbly love, serve and bless others with grace and goodness.
A few thoughts: We read this psalm with the advantage of hindsight (interpreting this knowing Jesus came), but “son” likely refers to David. He expects God to act with vengeance on his enemies. Jesus didn’t live up to David’s expectations. Everything about Jesus was opposite of what he expected. Jesus did not get rid of Israel’s earthly enemies, but He destroyed the spiritual one.
I find it interesting how Jesus quotes Isaiah 61 in Luke 4: he omits “the day of the Lord’s vengeance”. God didn’t unleash his vengeance as expected. He unleashed his love on the world and conquered the real enemy!
My inclination is to either strike back or to shrink back, retreat in the face of anti-Christian sentiment and mockery. It is my prayer that I may have to stamina and patience to ‘fight back’ the way Jesus exemplified – not with physical force but with kindness, and forgiveness. Help me to be confident that Jesus has already gained the victory and that true justice will come.
Jesus is Lord.
Serve Him.
The earth is the Lord’s and all within it must serve Him.
Even leaders today need to see Him and rule under His authority.
Our duty is to serve Him and therefor also all those around us.
He enables us to be His instruments of peace.
May also the governments of the world know that they too are His servants.
Pray for the leaders of this world that they too may see the Light.
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there’s despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy
O Divine Master
grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood, as to understand
to be loved as to love
For it is in giving that
we receive
It is in pardoning
that we are pardoned
And it is dying
that we are born to eternal life
