Agents of peace!

THE STORY OF JESUS: Luke 22:31-38
“If you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” (Luke 22:36)
Some christians use this verse to support their right to bear arms for self-defense.
Maybe by themselves, but not when read in their context.
Jesus explains WHY they needed swords in the next verse: “It is written…”
He quotes Isaiah 53:12 how the Messiah is arrested with transgressors (lit. rebels).
The swords were symbols of rebellion, and were meant to fulfill those words (v.37).
Jesus isn’t talking about self-defense; how could two swords be enough (v.38)?
During the arrest, Jesus stops Peter from using the sword (Luke 22:49-51).
In Matthew Jesus says, “All who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matthew 26:52).
Jesus asks, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?” (Luke 22:52).
In other words, ‘are you counting me as a rebel, treating me like a criminal?’
Jesus is setting the stage for His arrest to show how He is God’s messiah.
As Jesus followers, we do NOT need swords (or guns) to defend ourselves.
We entrust our life to God, and those authorized to carry the sword (Romans 13:1-7).
Swords (and guns) will always be instruments of death, ill-suited for agents of peace.
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, forgive me for thinking that any kind of violence or rebellion will save us. Impress on my heart the way of grace, humility and peace. Help me to overcome evil with good… not more evil.

  1. Jesus prayed for Simon and he in turn was instructed to be there for his brothers.
    Go with God.
Where do I turn when in doubt or in difficulty or with my problems?
    Self-sufficient
    or
    God empowered?
As Jesus took care of His disciples and tried to prepare them for the trials to come
He also takes care of you and me.
Prayerfully meet the challenges in His power.
    Prayerfully.

    Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

    Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Savior, still our refuge—
    Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
