THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 12:41-44
“They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:44)
Who are the heroes of our day, millionaire philanthropists, celebrities fighting for a cause?
Prominent Christian leaders who preach faith, hope and love in this world of darkness?
Personally, my vote goes out to the struggling Christians that few or nobody hears about.
Those living in the trenches of this dark world, with little by way of comfort, ease or wealth.
Like this poor widow, whose tiny offering would not even be noticed – except for Jesus.
Recently I have observed the struggle of single moms, and gained a whole new appreciation.
No, they are not saints, they have their weaknesses, their struggles, their doubts.
But the ones I know persevere, rise up after huge challenges, keep on believing.
I also think of those who struggle with sickness, mental health concerns, inadequate finances.
Or those who have experienced abuse, injustice, family or marital breakdown, addiction.
The list goes on, ordinary invisible people that very few notice – except for Jesus.
The faith, hope and love that emanates from many of these unnoticed saints is remarkable.
This widow gave out of her poverty, many of us give out of our excess.
These unseen heroes believe through their trials, many of us believe in ease.
“In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.” (2 Corinthians 8:2-4)
Paul notices the remarkable faith of the Macedonian believers too, and tells others about them.
This post is in honour of all the unseen Jesus-followers who, though having little, give their all for Him!
These are the saints that Jesus will celebrate at His final awards banquet.
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, please give an extra boost of love and encouragement to these invisible saints today. May they know that their faith, hope and love are not in vain!
