The path to greatness

THE STORY OF JESUS: Luke 7:24-30
“They acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.” (Luke 7:29)
John’s message had been repent; not everyone wanted to hear that message.
Those who had been open to John’s message were open to Jesus’ message.
But those who were confident in themselves, rejected both John and Jesus.
They “rejected God’s purpose for themselves” (Luke 7:30), the path to blessing.
True humility leads to greatness, not self-confidence or self-promotion.
We were made for greatness, everyone of us, through our relationship to God.
Like the small antennae on a skyscraper, our elevation relies on what holds us up.
Those who fall to their knees – including sinners like tax collectors – stand tallest.
Those who admit their true self before God end up finding their true worth in God.
Both John and Jesus preached the same message: repent and believe and receive God’s love!
I am convinced that our response to Jesus’ message reveals what is in our hearts.
God purpose is to bless us, but He cannot bless closed hearts.
God purpose is to fill us, but He cannot fill us when we are full of ourselves.
Am I like those who were open to God, and to His grace?
Or am I like those who reject God’s purpose, and refuse to open myself to His blessing?
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, show me how true repentance does not bring me down, but lifts me higher than I could imagine.

  1. Observations/Application
    John was the forerunner.
    Jesus came and encouraged him.
John was a messenger of the Light.
People came to hear and see that Light.
They had open eyes, open ears, and an open heart.
When the people heard Jesus with their open ears and open heart they knew He was right. They saw the Way which was started through John’s preaching. They were on their pilgrim’s progress being a Jesus follower. They had seen the Light.
Help me daily Lord to be like the wise men of old and follow the Light You gave.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
    I want to see You
    I want to see You

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
    I want to see You
    I want to see You

To see You high and lifted up
Shinin’ in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy
