In one sense, we are gods!

SCRIPTURE: John 10:31-39
“Is it not written in your Law, I have said you are ‘gods’?” (John 10:34)
God created humans to be like God,  to rule on God’s behalf.
Jesus quotes Psalm 82, which describes God’s appointed rulers as ‘gods’.
The parallel verse adds “you are all sons of the Most High.” (Psalm 82:6)
Both are ways of saying we are God’s specially appointed representatives.
Jesus claims to be the Son of God (v.36), and they see that as blasphemy.
Jesus is answering their question, “If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” (John 10:24)
The Messiah, like Adam (at first), is a faithful child of God, or Son of God (Luke 3:38).
Psalm 82 is a rebuke of God’s appointed rulers (‘gods’), because they did not rule well.
Jesus is not claiming to be the 2nd person of the trinity.
*** That is rooted in His identity as the ‘Word of God’ (John 1:1)
With Jesus’ coming – a faithful Son of God – God’s kingdom order (Genesis 1) is restored.
He will defeat the serpent and reverse the curse of death.
He will receive all authority (Matthew 28:18) and restore God’s family of image-bearers.
Do you know who you are, why God created, how God wants you to live?
Do you know why Jesus came for you, died for you, what He has saved you for?
You were made to be like God on earth, His representative, to live like He would live!!!
I hesitate to say ‘you are gods’ – it’s misunderstood – but in a Psalm 82 sense it’s true.
It is not blasphemy, it is gospel truth: you are a child of the Most High God!
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, help me to know who You are, so that I may know who I am. Help me to like You, a faithful son of God.

  1. Observation/Application
The religious leaders wanted to Kill Jesus because He made Himself equal with God. And the law of Moses laid down the death penalty for such a crime.
Jesus claims Himself on His deeds and not His words. He was sent into the world to carry out His Father’s task. He was our sin offering fulfilling His mission for being our Saviour.
His words have the power of Life for those who believe. He gives the power to live for Jesus each day and be His witness in His world.
    Do I hear?
    Do I do?
I need to have both to live for Jesus.

Living for Jesus, a life that is true,
    Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad hearted and free,
This is the pathway of blessing for me.
    Refrain

O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee,
For Thou, in Thy atonement, didst give Thyself for me.
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne.
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.
