Jesus in the Jewish Bible

SCRIPTURE: Luke 24:13-27
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27)
Do you read the Jewish bible?
Most Christians refer to the Jewish bible as the Old Testament (or Covenant).
Yet many Christians read it as if it was still the New Testament.
“By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.” (Hebrews 8:13)
We can learn from the Jewish Scriptures, but as a whole it is part of the old (obsolete, outdated) arrangement.
Jesus fulfils the Jewish Scriptures, centred in the Law (Moses and the Prophets).
He is the goal or end-purpose of the Law.
We can certainly read the Jewish Scriptures, but only as an arrow, pointing to Jesus.
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” (John 5:39-40)
Are you aware of all that is said in the Jewish Scriptures concerning Jesus?
If not, make this a personal homework assignment – find out more about Who Jesus is, and why you need Him too.
We are not a religion of the book, we are a religion of the Messiah, of Jesus!
He is our source of life, He is our hope for mercy, He is our pattern for righteous living!
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, I would love to sit in class taught by You, explaining to me all that was said in the Scriptures concerning You. May all my Bible reading lead me closer to You, and to life in Your Name!

  1. To be honest I always skip over the Old Testament. I find that it’s full of anger, pain and killing. The New Testament is much more loving, more full of Grace. Although, I have to come to terms that the Old Testament is crucial and important if I want to continue to understand the Bible. I will make it my homework to try and understand the Jewish Bible even if only in small portions so I can get a glimpse of what Scriptures is saying concerning Him.

  2. Observation/Application
    Did you see?
    Yes!
    Not really.
Did you hear the words spoken?
    Yes!
    Not really.
As the men on the road to Emmaus did experience all the happenings, they really didn’t until . . . Jesus Christ came along. This reminds me of the child’s poem I used in Bible class
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the kings horses and all the kings men
couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again
    Until Jesus Christ came along!
He opens the eyes of the blinds
    and sets us free
to be His instruments of peace
    wholey on fire for Him.
    Ope my eyes Lord!

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see You, I want to see You

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see You, I want to see You

To see You high and lifted up
Shinin’ in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing, “Holy, holy, holy”

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see You, I want to see You
