How will a gun help me?

SCRIPTURE: Luke 22:31-38
The battle begins, Satan’s troops are on the move, and Peter is a prime target.
For some reason, Jesus changes his directives: “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” (Luke 22:36)
Take money, luggage and a weapon… are this new instructions for how to do ministry from now on?
Will God not be providing provision or protection anymore (Luke 22:35)
How does this one verse relate to the many words about being peaceful, not resisting our enemies, loving them?
It is too late at this moment to get these things, so Jesus seems to be saying this for the future.
Jesus may have said this to emphasize how dangerous and violent things were going to get.
In the next scene (Luke 22:47-51), when a sword is used, Jesus puts a stop to it and heals the injured man.
Some people use this verse to justify carrying guns for self-defense.
This is a difficult verse, not one that we can build a whole teaching on.
Our mission and mandate is the same: be agents of love, mercy, peace, justice, truth, integrity and non violence.
When the disciples go to work after Pentecost, they do not use weapons but peace and blessing.
We continue Jesus’ mission, and at times the going will get tough.
No amount of money, luggage or weaponry will suffice to overcome our Enemy.
We need God, Jesus, and the Spirit backing us, if we are to succeed.
Jesus is praying for us, that we might stand firm, and resist the enemies tactics and tricks.
“I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:32)
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, I am not sure what to do with this verse. How will a sword or gun help me? I need You, Your provision and Your protection. Help me to keep on trusting You, no matter how violent things get.
